PREVENTION EDUCATION

What is primary prevention in relationship violence? According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, primary prevention means stopping relationship violence before it occurs.
Prevention is an important part of our mission. Our Prevention Education Coordinator, Lily, provides prevention education to children of all ages in local daycares, elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools all over Albany County, as well as to educators and parents. Topics are age-appropriate and can range from healthy friendships and families for younger kids to respectful relationships versus unhealthy and abusive behaviors in teen relationships.
CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month. All children deserve to grow up in safe, nurturing homes. To that end, we provide education on healthy families and friendships in local daycares and schools along with activities and community events that focus on happy, safe childhoods.
In 2008, Prevent Child Abuse America introduced blue pinwheels as a symbol for child abuse prevention. SAFE Project staff plant blue pinwheels each April for Child Abuse Prevention Month.
For other prevention events and activities each April, including Wear Blue Day, check out April in our events calendar at www.safeproject.org/events.

TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. Violence in teen relationships is more common than you may think, with 1 in 3 teens experiencing physical, sexual, or emotional abuse. Here at SAFE Project, we know the importance of having honest conversations about how relationships should be healthy, positive, and respectful. That's why we provide prevention education in local schools and have meaningful conversations with teens, educators, and parents on healthy relationships, respect, red and green flags, and recognizing behaviors that may be unhealthy or even abusive.
Wear Orange Day is a day in February to bring awareness about teen dating violence and support healthy relationships by wearing orange. For the date, visit our events calendar at www.safeproject.org/events.
